Wath on Dearne 18 Yarnbury 17

YARNBURY suffered their second-successive one-point defeat after their opponents snatched a last-minute try.

It left their players feeling bemused as to how they managed to throw away a 17-5 lead and the chance of an away victory.

Luckily they remain in third place in Yorkshire One as their other rivals all lost ground, but they know they cannot afford further slips ups.

Yarnbury welcomed back centre Ben Horner after illness as the only change to the starting line up while leading try scorer Elis Gomersall, speedy wing forward Andy Van Heel and front row replacement Richard Longstaff, were all on the bench.

The weather began fair in South Yorkshire but soon darkened and snow and rain were on the menu for the second half

The Horsforth side failed to clear the Wath kick off and the heavy Wath pack managed to rumble the maul over the line for a try by prop James McCarthy.

This startled Yarnbury into life and they dominated the next 20 minutes. Their forwards secured good ball and flanker Joe Bennett typified their spirit with his powerful runs up the centre of the field.

They were rewarded with a simple try when a slick blindside break by scrum half and captain Oliver Cashman was finished off by winger Alex Clark. Stand-off Jarrod Huss just missed a difficult conversion.

Yarnbury went ahead when Bennett charged 40 metres upfield after a line-out and fed full back Stuart Wilson who scored wide on the right. Huss landed the difficult conversion into the breeze.

A third try soon followed when Yarnbury kicked for touch following several penalties. From the line-out a catch and drive was too slick for the home forwards and Yarnbury pack drove over the line for No 8 James Barrett to score an unconverted try.

At this stage Yarnbury had too much pace in the backs for the home side who had size throughout the team but seemed short on pace in defence.

Wath's main threat came from rolling mauls and they reduced the deficit just before the break. Wath kicked to the corner after Yarnbury were again penalised for offside at the ruck. They rolled their way over the line for wing forward Gareth Web to score a try.

Yarnbury had a 17-10 half-time lead but Wath looked better suited to the worsening weather conditions which reduced the pitch to a mudbath.

Their tactics were made for the conditions while Yarnbury tried to replicate their first-half performance but made a succession of handling errors with the greasy ball.

Wath pulled three points back with a straight forward penalty after 70 minutes but Yarnbury were in control and most of the play was in midfield.

However Yarnbury were penalised once again and experienced Wath scrum half Joe Bartlett kicked for the corner for a last ditch attempt at a winning try.

Yarnbury managed to wheel the scrum and were again penalised with influential back row forward Jimmy Cryan sin-binned for the final play.

Wath managed a touchdown from the resulting scrum with No8 Matt Burrows claiming the score.
