Otley 30 Hull 0

DIRECTOR of rugby James Tiffany hailed Otley's performance as their best of the season as they shut out opponents who had recently scored 44 points against Caldy.

His assessment was a fair one because the visitors were strong up front and put Otley under pressure at varying times but the recent work under the guidance of forwards coach Mark Luffman was crucial in keeping their line intact.

There was also a hat-trick of tries from winger Harry Hudson for the Cross Green faithful to savour as Otley cruised to victory.

Hull were first to threaten, gaining a scrum ten metres out where No 8 Oliver Cook made a determined break for the line. It was the nearest they were to get to scoring all afternoon.

Otley opened the scoring with a Stephen Depledge penalty after 17 minutes. The scrum half also landed another successful penalty after Hudson had capitalised on excellent passing to score a fine try.

Hull attacked strongly at the start of the second half in a bid to reduce the 11-0 deficit but Otley stood firm.

The home side extended their lead when centre Jack Mackie and full back Arnie Ellison combined to put Hudson over for a try which Depledge converted.

Otley demonstrated their supremacy when the forwards drove over from a five-metre scrum with No.8 Freddie Watson grounding.

The final try followed quick thinking by Depledge. He took a quick tap when his side was awarded a penalty close in. He found replacement stand-ff Tom Rock – the club's former player-coach – who put Hudson in for his hat-trick with a well-timed pass.

Depledge added the conversion

It was to Hull’s credit that they produced a strong finish but Otley were in no mood to weaken, and kept them scoreless.
