Grimsby Town 3, Guiseley 0

NATHAN Arnold came off the bench at half-time to knock Guiseley out of the FA Cup final qualifying round in front of 1,761 fans at Blundell Park.

The winger broke the deadlock and claimed the assist on the other goals as the Vanarama Conference Premier full-timers made their one-division advantage count against the depleted visitors.

Lions striker Adam Boyes had an early sight of goal but Grimsby soon took control, creating a host of chances.

Former Bradford City striker Ross Hannah was lively and Lenell John-Lewis was also a constant threat.

Somehow the Lions reached the break goalless, although the home side should have opened the scoring minutes before the interval when Hannah was fouled by Danny Lowe, earning the Guiseley defender a yellow card. But Scott Neilson – Grimsby's other former Bantam – had his free-kick superbly saved by Steve Drench.

Guiseley lost Boyes to an ankle injury early in the second half and that blunted what edge they had up front.

Around the hour mark, the home side finally found a way through and that led to two further goals in a 15-minute spell.

Arnold was picked out by a good cross from Jack Mackreth to head past Drench – and minutes later an Arnold shot struck a defender and dropped for John-Lewis to head into an unguarded net.

Lions substitute Oli Johnson had an effort well saved but Town wrapped up the scoring in the 75th minute, Arnold setting up John-Lewis for his second of the game.

Guiseley manager Mark Bower, while recognising that his side battled throughout, was frustrated at their poor distribution and said: "It was a difficult game, full stop.

"We defended quite well in the first half and they didn't have too many clear-cut chances – maybe one header that they should have done better with.

"But we looked pretty solid and created a chance early on for Boyesy. The big disappointment for me was our passing.

"We could have been so much better – simple passes going astray, balls bobbling under people's feet – and the lads are all disappointed about that in the changing room."

Selby Town 1, Guiseley 1 (after extra-time – Selby won 4-3 on penalties)

GUISELEY fielded a youthful team for the second straight round in the West Riding County FA Cup.

But goalkeeper Steve Dickinson, Oli Johnson and Danny Forrest, as well as Jack Stockdill, were given a run-out in the second-round tie.

Richard Metcalf's deflected shot gave Selby the lead on 19 minutes – but the Lions hit back to draw level seven minutes before the break.

The lively Luke Porritt robbed a home defender and advanced into the area, only to be brought down, with Johnson despatching the spot-kick with aplomb.

Callum Marshall had nearly equalised earlier, only for his shot to cannon back off the inside of a post.
