Hull Ionians 32 Otley 3

Otley were outmuscled by a strong Ionians side who have made a blistering start to the season.

The surprise was that Otley were unable to score a single try, a feat they usually manage against any side, but the home defence was rock-solid and always ready to prosper from any opposition lapse.

The hosts took control early in the game but found Otley, in turn, keeping a close watch and restricting them to just one try in the first period, with a penalty in return.

That established a 10-3 half-time lead but their relentless approach saw them grind their way to a comfortable win after the break.

A penalty for off-side from scrum-half Isaac Green on 11 minutes set Ionians on the way but it was 33 minutes before they broke through, winger Mike Bateman coming up into the line, creating the gap for winger Sam Wilson to go over and Green adding the conversion.

Just before the break there was a reply with a penalty from scrum-half Stephen Depledge but one minute into the second period the home pack drove over and No 8 Danny Hague grounded.

Green converted and two minutes later added a penalty.

Otley strived, but to no avail, and when their defence was drawn by a solid driving maul, an accurate cross-kick from fly-half Chris Reakes was snapped up by Wilson to claim his second try.

Ionians secured the bonus point when replacement scrum-half Adam Thomas broke from a midfield scrum, finding Hague in support to grab his second converted score.
