Yarnbury 12 Bradford & Bingley 25

Yarnbury welcomed the Bees to Brownberrie Lane for the final warm-up game before they start their Yorkshire One campaign at home to Old Brodleians on Saturday.

This was always going to be a hard encounter against their rivals from North East One.

Both clubs had squads of 30 players so the game saw changes throughout.

The Bees were physical from the start and Yarnbury were not seeing the ball from the scrums or line-outs but defensively they were giving nothing away.

However, the away side finally managed to get on the scoresheet after 20 minutes.

When a good attacking move down the left was halted, the ball was recycled right for wing forward Dave Bardon to go over for a try.

Yarnbury then wasted a good attacking position from a Bees infringement when they failed to find touch close to their opponents’ line.

The visitors went further ahead when prop Ryan Weath- erhead broke free to score a try which full back Richard Scull converted.

Although Yarnbury were outgunned for possession in the set pieces, they were making their presence felt around the park.

A slick James Barrett break down field saw the wing forward go 40 metres before being stopped short of the try line before the support could arrive.

Barrett was not to be denied. He made a similar break from a ruck and scored a try which Carl Paterson converted to reduce the deficit to 12-7 at half-time.

Yarnbury were giving as good as they were getting and a flowing attack down the right wing saw full back Lee Mortimer break away.

He was dragged down short of the try line but his attempted pass was intercepted and opposition winger Jack Malthouse broke away to score a try at the other end.

Stand-off Tom Gough extended the visitors lead with a try which Scull converted.

The home side were not finished and had their best spell in the last quarter.

Alex Clark and Ellis Gomersall had good runs before Yarnbury moved the ball through their forwards and backs for prop Guy Hawkridge to score a try.

Bradford and Bingley look strong and well placed to do well in North East One.

One step down, Yarnbury also look in good shape for the challenge ahead.
