Guiseley 0 Leeds United 2

LEEDS United needed two late goals to overcome a spirited Guiseley at Nethermoor.

Dave Hockaday’s new-look squad played in front of a sell-out crowd and new owner Massimo Cellino.

The Championship side showed their quality but they didn’t have it all their own way and the Lions came close to scoring.

Former Leeds United man Ben Parker captained Guiseley but his defence was almost breached within minutes. The first chance fell to the Whites’ loan signing Souleymane Doukara but he shot wide from 20 yards.

Steve Morison put a header into the side netting as Leeds kept the pressure on but Danny Forrest fired just over at the other end. Just before the half-hour Lions keeper Steve Drench tipped a Tommaso Bianchi effort over.

The best chance of the first half fell to Michael Tonge but he was also just too high with his shot.

Jake Lawlor really should have put the home side in front just after the interval but he shot wide when it looked easier to score.

A Doukara shot was deflected wide before Gavin Rothery fired a shot right at the Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri as the sides traded blows.

The visitors changed the entire side on the hour and with the Guiseley players tiring it was only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken. Drench foiled Lewis Walters but just as it looked as though the Lions might hold out, Jason Pierce headed in former Guiseley player Aidy White's corner.

To rub salt into the wounds, Matt Smith netted from close range in the final minute.

Guiseley boss Mark Bower was pleased with a solid afternoon's work.

He said: “I was pleased with the performance. We matched them for 80 to 85 minutes. It was disappointing to lose those late goals but overall we were good.

“We started the second half well and gave them problems. We kept our shape and discipline and restricted Leeds to long-range efforts. We looked fit and sharp but tired towards the end when they brought a fresh team on."
