Professional cyclists Lizzie Armitstead and Scott Thwaites have been named in the England cycling team for next month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Otley's Armitstead is set to compete on the track in the women's endurance event while Thwaites, from Burley-in-Wharfedale will ride in the men's road race.

Armitstead, 25, is having an outstanding season with the Dutch team Boels Dolmans and currently leads the Women's World Cup.

Thwaites, 24, is currently riding in the prestigious French race the Criterium Dauphine where he is hoping to win a place in NetApp Endura's team for the Tour de France.

Armitstead said: “It’s always an honour to be selected to represent your country, and I’m proud to be a part of the England team.

"I won the British national road race in Glasgow last year which took in part of the Commonwealth Games course.

"The crowds were amazing then so I’m sure this summer will be something else," said Armitstead, who was second at the last edition of the Commonwealth Games Road Race in Delhi. "Let's hope I can turn my silver medal from last time into gold."
