FOOTBALL is well and truly back on the map at Guiseley School. After a period of absence they now have three teams up and running at Years 7, 10 and 11.
All have had a great season, the Year 7s winning the Kirkstall 5 A-Side competition and the Year 10s finished third in the North West Schools League, failing narrowly to make the play-offs.
Without doubt the pick of the bunch has to be the Year 11 squad who had a 100 per cent record.
They qualified into the Leeds Schools under-16s Champions League play-offs where they progressed to the final which was played at South Leeds Stadium against Bruntcliffe School.
Once Guiseley got into their stride they established control of the game. Fab Bailey hit the bar with a great effort from 25 yards out and Adam Hartley opened the scoring after 28 minutes when he headed home a well-taken free kick.
Five minutes later Ollie Hulme pounced to add a second goal from close in, and Harry Naylor went close with a header against the bar. Guiseley protected their 2-0 advantage until the break.
The second period began much the same as the first half ended with Guiseley pressurising Bruntcliffe, realising a third goal was needed to clinch the game.
After some waiting and going close on a couple of occasions, Guiseley got their reward when Bailey reacted quickly to a goalkeeping error to seal the 3-0 win.
Captain Dan Western said afterwards: “Not bad for a few lads who were just kicking a ball about in the tennis courts in year 10."
