Vauxhall Motors 0, Guiseley 5

Guiseley were rampant as they ripped a young Vauxhall Motors side apart in a mauling that saw the contest done and dusted before the interval.

The Motormen have made their intentions clear regarding their resignation from the Conference North at the end of the season.

Their financial plight has seen some of their established players leave Rivacre Park, and left them with a weakened, inexperienced squad.

Guiseley exploited that as they were ruthless in pursuit of the victory they needed to consolidate their fifth-place spot.

Mark Bower’s men are in the play-off places but still have only a one-point cushion over Boston United, although the Lincolnshire outfit have played a game more.

They could not have got off to a better start on the south bank of the Mersey on Saturday as they were 2-0 up inside a quarter of an hour.

Danny Ellis opened the scoring and Adam Boyes doubled their lead. Alex Johnson made it 3-0 soon after before Boyes weighed in with his second.

The Lions went nap before the break when Gavin Rothery netted a 38th-minute penalty after Michael Potts, who had come on minutes earlier to replace the unwell Jake Lawlor, had his heels clipped just as he shaped to shoot.

Bower said: “It was really pleasing because I was probably more worried about this one than Tuesday.”

Guiseley beat second-placed AFC Telford, 6-1, in midweek. That victory was put into perspective at the weekend when the Midlands club moved back to the summit.

“We showed character and application to win again. We’re in the frame now but we certainly weren’t going to go under the radar to come from where we were to get into the play-offs, so everyone knows we’re on a very good run.”
