Rumours of Guiseley fixture's demise have been greatly exaggerated

Guiseley were last night forced to allay fears that tonight’s Conference North home fixture against Gainsborough Trinity had already been postponed.

The club posted on their website that they have high hopes the game will beat the recent extreme wet weather.

The BBC had stated that the game was called off in advance but Lions chief Adrian Towers said the club had no idea where that erroneous information had come from.

Guiseley have had more than their share of postponements, especially at Nethermoor, over recent weeks but they have spent the last two days working on the pitch. More sand has been spread and drainage work has been ongoing.

With all the extra effort, helped by a mainly dry two days, the 12th-placed Lions are expecting the pitch to be fit to host Trinity, who are 17th.

The Lions are looking to bounce back from three straight defeats but the visitors’ last run-out ended in a 6-0 thumping by Boston.

Brighouse Town are also hoping to get a home game in as they look to the visit of struggling Maltby Main in the Toolstation Northern Counties East Premier Division.

Town are fifth in the table and a win would take them above neighbours Thackley.

Brighouse have dedicated tonight’s match to the memory of former player Jimmy Heffernan and hope to begin with a moment’s silence that will turn into applause.

Heffernan was a midfielder who continued to serve the club as a volunteer until he died recently at the age of 54 after a long illness.

Town chairman Ray McLaughlin said: “He was one of the characters of Brighouse Town who will never be forgotten.”
