Martin Whitcombe isn't losing patience with Old Grovians
Old Grovians 28, Thornensians 43
Old Grovians fell to their fourth defeat in five SSE Yorkshire Division Three matches – but again picked up a bonus point, this time for scoring four tries.
Director of rugby Martin Whitcombe hasn’t lost patience with his charges after their promotion as runners-up, however.
He said: “We are competing well in scrums and line-outs but our greatest strength is also greatest weakness.
“We are a side of 20 and 21-year-olds playing against sides who have players in their late twenties and include 30-year-olds.
“We are playing against sides who have more structure and who are well organised.
“We want to play a hard, fast game, we want to play with width, we want to get the ball out to the backs – that is the only way we can play.
“But we are confident that if we keep on playing the way we are that things will come right.”
Old Grovians, who are fourth from bottom, won their first game of the season 26-17 at Northallerton, but have since been defeated by Old Modernians, Rotherham Phoenix, Skipton and Thornensians.
Next up for Whitcombe and his team is a third derby of the campaign, and their most local, at Aireborough, who are three points but four places better off in what is a tight division.
