Otley Town are sunk by nightmare six minutes
Otley Town 2, Wetherby Athletic 4
Otley Town were brought back to earth with a bump following their previous week’s demolition of Whitkirk Wanderers in the West Yorkshire League Premier Division.
Once again, manager Danny Gallagher was forced to chop and change his line-up, with Scott Firth beginning a three-match ban, Dan Chadwick and Sam Jewell being away on holiday and Harry Higgins taking over the goalkeeping duties.
The opening 20 minutes were largely free of incident but in a nightmare spell of six minutes, Town conceded three goals.
The first came from a free-kick into the box, Higgins and his defenders going for the same ball, but both being beaten by an alert Wetherby player, who scored with the simplest of flicked headers.
A couple of minutes later, a well-worked move on the edge of the Town area saw the second Wetherby goal lashed in.
With Town still struggling to clear their heads, a Wetherby attacker then robbed Josh Waite of possession, ran clear and planted the ball beyond Higgins to leave Town staring down the barrel of another heavy home defeat.
If Town were to have any hope, they knew they had to score before half-time, and they managed to do so when James Todd followed up his own shot which had been parried to sweep the ball home.
The second half was much more even, with both sides going close to scoring, but finding the opposing goalkeeper in excellent form.
Then, with time running out for Town, Todd latched onto a through ball to lob the keeper and make the score 3-2, setting up a frantic last ten minutes.
However, with Town desperately committing men forward, Wetherby broke away to score a fourth and seal the match.
On Saturday, Town are at Fields (kick-off 2:30pm), where they will need to be at their best as they have struggled to pick up points there in recent seasons.
