Youngsters shine in Otley victory
Otley 29, Bromsgrove 17
For various reasons, Otley were short of six first-team squad members yesterday, which meant a number of youngsters were given an early taste of SSE National League Two North rugby, and they performed splendidly.
Bromsgrove were a strong-running side and had the upper hand in the early line-out, testing the home defence but the cover tackling was tenacious and they began to frustrate the visitors, the result being a yellow card for scrum half Aaron Higgins and advantage was quickly taken.
A Bromsgrove clearing kick was run back by full back Arnie Ellison, the ball being moved smoothly to centre Jack Mackie, who forced his way over, fly half Mark Ireland converting.
Otley were now working the ball well, getting to the line only to concede a penalty but they soon forced a five-metre scrum, a quick heel leading to the ball moving quickly out to winger James Wood, who crossed in the corner for Ireland to convert.
Then No 8 Dan Temm, catching the eye as ever, slipped a scrimmage pass to scrum half Stephen Depledge, who created gap for Ellison, coming up at pace, to slice through and set up a try for flanker Jack Scott Paul, Ireland again converting.
Bromsgrove opened their account with a penalty in added time from No 10 Richard Mahoney but under Otley pressure after the break they lost a prop to the sin-bin, Ireland landing the penalty.
Mahoney kicked two penalties but Otley were not done, Depledge taking a quick tap penalty and slick handling putting Ellison in at the corner, Ireland producing another fine conversion.
A late fight back saw winger Ollie Bache scoring a try for Bromsgrove, and just before the finish Mahoney kicked a penalty.
