Kelley and Hutchinson on county duty
9:29am Thursday 5th September 2013 in Sport
Otley’s Jack Kelley and Cookridge Hall’s Ben Hutchinson were in the Yorkshire team that finished runners-up in the Boys’ County Championship last week at Kedleston Park in Derbyshire.
Defending champions Yorkshire defeated Hampshire, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands 6½-2½ on the final day but it was not enough to catch first-time winners Staffordshire, who saw off Devon 8-1.
Both Staffordshire and Yorkshire emerged with two victories but the Midlanders took the title with 17 points to Yorkshire’s 15½.
After their previous day’s defeat by Devon, Yorkshire knew that they not only had to beat Hampshire but they had to do it well.
Kelley defeated Tom Farrow-Smith 4&2 while Hutchinson overwhelmed the unfortunate Tommy Donaldson 6&5, the end of the contest being settled on the 13th green when the Hampshire lad was penalised a shot after his ball moved when he addressed it.
Devon, beaten on the opening day, responded by beating Yorkshire 5½-3½, while Staffordshire, also losers in round one, hit back by upstaging Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands by the same score.
Kelley and Hutchinson gained halves against Harry Konig and Ollie Cowl.
Yorkshire skipper Gary Brown was disappointed that they had lost the title but said: “Our lads played well against Hampshire. They gave 100 per cent, and you can’t ask more than that.
“We thought that if we could get six points we’d be happy but Staffordshire played superbly to get eight against Devon. But the damage was done when we lost to Devon.
“We didn’t play our best and Devon deserved to win.”
