It's the same old story for Town
11:43am Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Sport
Otley Town 0 Bardsey 3
Same time, same place, same opposition – a year on – same result.
That was the story for Otley Town as they started their 2013-14 Premier Division campaign, as they did their last, with a thumping home defeat to Bardsey The league champions, despite having several several of their front line players under suspension – still had for too much knowhow for naive Otley.
Right from the word go Bardsey were in the groove and stretching Otley.
With veterans Michael Longfellow and Graeme Bingley dictating midfield and Michael Mills domin- ating at centre half Bardsey controlled things in a one-sided first period.
It was surprising that Town survived the examin- ation right up until 30 seconds before the break, when an innocuous looking cross evaded everybody and somehow finished up in the net.
Although Bardsey fully deserved the lead it was a soft goal, and hard on the likes of Josh Waite, Jamie Simms and skipper Rob Carr who had worked their socks off for the cause.
Against the Bardseys of this world it’s imperative that all of your starting 11 are up for it and ready to compete.
Sadly for Town in this first run-out of the season they had too many players standing around waiting for things to happen and ultimately watching the game go by.
Town started the second period with a little more resolve and Scott Firth might have scored from a good chance created by Harry Higgins early on, but by and large Bardsey were still calling the shots.
When they collected their second goal – again a soft one – they were in complete control.
A third goal soon followed and that was game over.
Sam Jewell hit the bar with a fine free kick late on but that was about it for Town.
This was not the start that they were looking for and they will need a big improvement in their next two games which are away from home.
They were due to visit Leeds City last night before travelling to Horbury Town on Saturday.
