Otliensians' fortunes on the up

Old Otliensians are pushing hard to regain their Yorkshire Division Three status with a young, vibrant side which is unrecognisable to those of recent years.

The ’Ensians are currently third in Division Four, just four points away from second, and have lost just twice all season.

Coach John Walker, who took charge after their relegation from Division Three in 2011, said: “We have a very young side which I think has helped us.

“They have a lot of energy, are keen to listen and learn, and most importantly, just want to go out and play rugby.”

In addition to a group of talented youngsters, ’Ensians now have much more strength in depth.

Walker added: “We couldn’t cope with injuries last year because there weren’t enough players. Now, there is much more depth at the club which has made a big difference.”

Walker, who also coaches Huddersfield University, believes promotion is a genuine possibility: “I think we have a good chance.

“If we maintain our form and just take it a game at a time, I don’t see why we can’t do it.

“If we can cut out some of the silly mistakes we’ve been making we’ll be there or thereabouts.”

Unaffected by the snow in recent weeks, the promotion contenders have continued to train twice a week indoors.

Walker is pleased they have been able to keep training, saying: “I don’t think we do weeks off particularly well, the lads just want to get out and play so it’s been good that we’ve been able to keep training.”

Old Otliensians will be looking to further their promotion prospects in their next game away at Wetherby on Saturday.
