CLASSIC cycling attire was donned in Ilkley on Thursday [[July 3]] in sharp contrast to the figure-hugging high-tech gear worn by Tour de France riders.

The Clarke Foley Centre and Ikkley Cycling Club joined forces for hint of nostalgia at the inaugural Ilkley Traditional Country Ride.

The ride was a collaboration between the centre of the over 650s, on Cunliffe Road, and the fast-expanding cycling club, to celebrate the momentous event of the Tour de France passing through the town and surrounding area.

With a dress code calling for tweed, plus fours, bow ties, vintage cycle jerseys, headscarves for the ladies and smart outfits for the men, cyclists gathered at the Bandstand on The Grove just after noon for a send-off tea.

The then set off on a leisurely jaunt, first to the renowned spa village of Ben Rhydding and thence made a beeline for the Cavendish Pavilion at Bolton Abbey.

An elegant reception with refreshments was laid on for their return.

Prizes were awarded for the oldest bicycles - both gentleman’s and ladies - and for the finest man and woman’s costumes.
