Yeadon pupils combine poetry and war
Pupils from a Yeadon school are among those taking part in a poetry competition inspired by a garden from the First World War
Youngsters from Yeadon Westfield Junior are among pupils from 16 Leeds school writing poems on the theme of 'Nature and Remembrance' as part of a competition inspired by the city's First World War-themed Chelsea Flower Show entry.
Leeds Parks and Countryside Service and garden sponsors The Royal British Legion have devised the competition which reflects the themes of this year's Chelsea entry 'The Largest Room in the House'. Based upon the famous garden at Talbot House near Ypres, where soldiers were able to grab some rest and recuperation between periods in the trenches, the Leeds garden picks up on the restorative powers of a calm garden environment.
Classes taking part in the competition are using materials provided in The Royal British Legion schools' resources pack and then writing their own pieces of poetry. The writers of the two best entries, one from a primary and one from a secondary school, will win themselves a visit to the Chelsea Flower Show and a trip for their whole class.
The Royal British Legion will be arranging for the winning Primary class to visit the National Army Museum in London and the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
After their visit to the National Army Museum, the winning secondary class will travel with The Royal British Legion on a tour of World War One battlefield sites in France and Belgium.Coun John Procter, the council's Executive Member for Leisure, said: "I am really looking forward to reading the entries and wish them all luck in winning these fantastic prizes."
