Otley women give fell rescue team a boost
UPPER Wharfedale Fell Rescue Assoc-iation is set to receive an £800 boost tonight thanks to Otley Towns-women's Guild.
The donation came about after the late Otley photographer and association team member, Edward Winpenny, had arranged to give a talk to guild members but was forced to cancel due to illness.
The guild, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this October, decided to pick the rescue team as its charity for the year, and raised the money through its many coffee mornings and annual fundraiser at The Buttercross.
Association Chairman Howard Driver, who was set to receive a cheque for the money from the group at Otley Methodist Church Meeting Room tonight, said: "We are so grateful to the guild.
"Not just for the staggering amount they raised but also for the sheer effort they put in, especially at the Buttercross event where they represented us with such credit as well as giving out hundreds of our leaflets."
Based in Grassington, the association consists of 100 highly trained volunteers from across the region and has members from Otley, Ilkley, Menston and Guiseley. It carries out caving and pothole rescues as well as rescues from the fells, and also assists with police searches.
