Donkeys take part in Menston fundraiser
For years they entertained children by plodding along the sands of a number of seaside resorts.
But now donkeys are serving a new purpose in life - therapy.
It has been discovered that the placid beasts, first brought to Britain to toil down mines, are soothing creatures, providing endless pleasure for children with disabilities and the elderly.
Just a few weeks ago Wharfedale Newspapers rep-orted how they were being used to bring joy to Alz-heimer's sufferers in a Burley-in-Wharfedale nursing home.
Now they will be visiting the village of Menston on Donkey Day' as part of a fundraising appeal.
The donkeys are based in Eccup, Leeds, at the Elisabeth Svensden Trust which provides therapy to children with special needs and disabilities, or behavioural problems.
The charity, based there since 1999, offers donkey rides from qualified instructors to children who also get the opportunity to groom them.
The animals were chosen for their docile nature which has a calming affect on riders and the centre offers rides to pupils between Mondays and Fridays every week.
Menston woman Lynne Aldridge, who works as a cook at the centre said: "The work done at the centre is excellent and it is really wonderful so see the affect the donkeys have on children.
"They are so calming - they are like big dogs and are so friendly.
"Donkey Day will give children in Menston the chance to come and see what they are like - we won't be doing rides but they can stroke them and get to know them."
The fundraising event has been organised by a group of friends including Cathy Tully, who was keen to raise money for a worthwhile charity.
It will be held at the Fairfax Club in Menston on Sunday, June 8 from 12pm -5pm.
There will be a variety of stalls, refreshments, a raffle and a barbecue.
Mrs Tully said: "Donkey riding therapy raises confidence and self-esteem and can also help improve balance, strength, co-ordination and mobility.
"The centre is currently raising funds to equip a sensory room which will enhance the facilities available to children visiting there."
