Guides' dedicated district commissioner
9:27am Thursday 29th July 2010 in Obituary
Members of the local Guiding movement have paid tribute to a dedicated district commissioner who died recently.
Burley-in-Wharfedale’s Sandra Newman, the Woodhead district commissioner, died following a short illness.
Guiding in Wharfedale says the organisation is thriving due to the dedication of its volunteers, and it wants to pay tribute to the work of Mrs Newman, who has dedicated more than 30 years to Guiding.
Sandra started her Guiding in Rawdon. She was a Brownie leader for many years in Burley, and more recently helped with Menston Rainbows.
For the past five years, she has been District Commissioner for Woodhead (Menston and Burley).
“She will be sadly missed by all the girls and leaders who have benefited from her leadership and friendship”, said Guiding in Wharfedale.
“During the last few months Sandra was very involved with the preparation of our centenary exhibition, currently on at the Manor House Museum, Ilkley. Sandra will be fondly remembered by everyone she knew.”
Sandra created a centenary wall hanging for the exhibition, made from the many guiding badges which the girls can work towards. The wall hanging is now on display in memory of her.
