Rawdon Quakers hold Peace Day and concert

Two events in Rawdon this weekend are part of National Quaker Week celebrations.

Rawdon Quaker Meeting, which is well known for its concert series in support of Amnesty Inter-national, will be holding a Peace Day on Saturday with the participation of pupils from Rawdon Littlemoor and Rawdon St Peter’s schools.

Peace cards, designed by pupils from the two schools, will be on display in the meeting house from 10am to 4pm, and a selection will be chosen for use in Rawdon’s annual Amnesty card-writing day on November 25. Certificates will be presented to the designers of the selected cards at 11am.

At 1.30pm, those attending the event will hear Sarah’s story, a first-hand account of a family’s escape from Eritrea to the UK.

Refreshments will be available all day in the school room. All are welcome to attend to drop in for a cup of tea, take a picnic to enjoy in the peaceful garden or simply to have a look round.

Admission is free, with opportunities to make donations to Amnesty International and to Rawdon Quaker Meeting.

On Sunday, the venue is privileged to present Old Friends and New Pieces, featuring musicians from Opera North Colin Honour (principal clarinet), Liz Wyly (viola), Claire Sadler (double bass), Martin Pickard (piano) and Bibi Heal (soprano).

The concert, the seventh in Rawdon’s 2012 series in aid of Amnesty International, will take place at 7.30pm in the Quaker Meeting House in Quakers Lane. Admission is free and there will be a collection for Amnesty International.
