Rickshaw ride is delayed until the school holidays

A fundraising Scarborough to Otley rickshaw ride has been pushed back until October.

Otley Explorer Scouts Oliver Bumby and Jamie Thomas had hoped to undertake the unusual challenge – journeying 80 miles on the three-wheeled ‘bicycle taxi’ – later this month.

But the possibility of the event taking longer than the two days planned, and so spilling into the 15-year-olds’ school week, resulted in it being postponed until the October half-term break.

Oliver's father, Kevin, said the extra time would be put to good use by the boys, who are both members of the Otley Parish Scout Group and need to raise £2,500 each towards an expedition to India with other Explorers next year.

He said: “Doing it on a weekend would have been fun, but when we looked at how long it might take them, you could see it could stretch past two days. Having it in the October half-term will give us that extra leeway, if we need it.

“They’ll be aiming to do it on October 27 and 28. Their training has been going well, and they’re doing very well with the fundraising. A lot of local companies have sponsored them to have their names on the side of the rickshaw, and now they’ve started collecting from individuals too.”
