Record entries for Arthington Show competition
2:30pm Tuesday 3rd July 2012 in Local news
Organisers of the 2012 Arthington Show are hoping for a re-run of last year’s fine weather when the traditional event takes place this weekend.
Arthington, Bram-hope, Pool & District Horticultural & Agri-cultural Society is promising an attraction-packed event – featuring six show rings to allow a record number of horse entries – at Pool-in-Wharfedale on Sunday.
Cattle, sheep, dogs, produce, handicrafts and vintage tractors will also be on display at the showfield, by Pool Bridge, while demonstr-ations will be given in coopering, corn dolly making, spinning, weav-ing and martial arts.
Show president Alan Raw said: “There will be six show rings in total to accommodate the huge numbers of horse entries. These are at a record level, as many exhibitors have been disappointed this year that a number of shows have had to be cancelled, so are keen to get out and compete.
“Cattle and sheep entries have also increased so visitors can expect to see a superb show of livestock.”
Plenty of events have been arranged for younger visitors, too, including children’s fancy dress and mounted fancy dress competitions, children’s races and a pets and duck race, with proceeds from the duck race – which last year raised more than £1,000 – going to charity.
Other attractions on the day, which begins at 9am, include carriage driving classes, falconry displays, an appearance by the Badsworth and Bramham Moor Hunt and live music courtesy of Otley Folk Club.
Entry is £6 for adults, £3 for children and concessions, and car parking is free. Society membership costs £20, which includes two admission tickets, two lunches for two and a car pass.
