The Otley & Yeadon ward looks set to be a key battleground in next month’s Leeds City Council elections.
Otley Town Council leader Councillor John Eveleigh (Lab, Ashfield) is preparing to contest a seat that has been held for years by Councillor Graham Kirkland – who is stepping down – on Thursday, May 3.
Coun Eveleigh, who came within a whisker of defeating Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) at last year’s elections, will be up against fellow town councillor Sandy Lay, who is hoping to succeed Coun Kirkland for the Liberal Democrats.
Also standing for the seat will be former Aireborough councillor and retired GP Makhan Thakur, for the Conservatives, Steven Crossan, for the Green Party, and Ryan Preston, for Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts.
Labour will be hoping to consolidate their position as the largest single party and controlling group on Leeds City Council, following their success in the 2011 elections which left them holding 55 of the 99 available seats.
For the Liberal Democrats meanwhile, who lost five seats last year, and to a lesser extent the Conservatives – who are the second biggest party with 21 seats – the challenge will be to bounce back from last time.
