A road safety campaigner has been made an honorary citizen of Otley.

Former policeman David Robson received the honour, given in recognition of his many years’ work with the Otley & District Road Safety Committee, at the town council’s annual meeting on Monday.

Mr Robson acts as quizmaster for the committee’s annual schools road safety quiz, and although he retired from the committee in 2009 will return to pose questions to the participating children again at this year’s event.

New town mayor Councillor Ray Smith, who presented the certificate to Mr Robson, said: “These awards are given to people who have gained the respect and admiration of all of us for the work they’ve done for the town.

“This year we have someone who is very well known and is dear to my own heart, and who has worked a lot with children teaching them about road safety through his fantastic quizzes.

“The town council has unanimously decided that David Robson should be made an honorary citizen of the town, it’s a great honour and well deserved.”

Mr Robson said: “It’s a humble pleasure and privilege to be an honorary citizen of this ‘little town of Otley’, and I will always strive to deserve the honour bestowed on me which I receive with grateful thanks.”
