Facelift for Bramhope nature reserve

Improvement work is due to begin on Monday at a Bramhope nature reserve.

Leeds City Council’s countryside and access maintenance team will start on the first phase of the bridleway resurfacing project at Breary Marsh.

The work will involve the temporary closure and diversion of the main bridleway through the nature area.

Breary Marsh is a site of special scientific interest and the council is stressing that care will be taken to minimise damage to the soil, plants and wildlife.

The first phase, from the A660 Leeds Road to the stream, is expected to take three to four weeks. If further funding is approved by the Outer North West Area Committee, work will continue on site in April to finish the streamside section of bridleway.

The council describes Breary Marsh Nature Reserve as “the best remaining example of a wet valley alder wood in West Yorkshire, a habitat which was once common along the streams and river valleys in the county.”

Breary Marsh is next to the A660 Otley Road and the car park for Golden Acre Park. A network of footpaths and bridleways provides access throughout the site, and a boardwalk provides access through the swampy alder wood.
