Lord Mayor invites litter pick youngsters to tea

Two community-spirited children were invited to take afternoon tea with the Lord Mayor of Leeds to thank them for their determination to keep Otley tidy.

Ten-year-old Oliver Youngs and his six-year-old sister Emily take great pride in clearing litter from the street around their home in Wellcroft, Otley.

And their efforts were rewarded with a special thank you from the Lord Mayor, Coun Brian Cleasby, who took tea with them at Civic Hall.

He said: "These children are a shining example of community spirit and are such positive role models for all young people in Leeds "As soon as I heard about their efforts to help make Otley a better place to live, work and visit I was only too happy to invite them to the Civic Hall for afternoon tea to thank them for their hard work."

The children's mum, Mrs Beverley Youngs, said they were very excited, and it was very kind of the Lord mayor to invite them.

"Oliver and Emily regularly pick up litter from their street to help keep it clean and tidy," she said.

"They do it without being asked and for no reward but this has not deterred them and they always take pride in keeping their street litter free."
