Guiseley's chronic parking shortage could be eased thanks to developers promising land for a public car park.
The developer of the former Crompton Parkinson factory site this week offered land opposite for Leeds City Council to use as a car park.
The proposal to build 20 homes on the factory site has still to go through the planning process, but it is being welcomed by Coun Graham Latty, who has been campaigning for more car parking in the town.
The Guiseley and Rawdon councillor said: "At present there simply isn't enough car parking to cope with demand in Guiseley. The demand is particularly high around the train station area, with many rail commuters needing to park there. This also means there is insufficient parking for shoppers visiting the town.
"I have been pressing the council to establish a new public car park in the area for some time. This proposal is part of the Crompton Mills developer's proposal to build 20 new homes on the Crompton Mills site. The proposal has to go through the planning application process and will be subject to full public consultation, so the views of Guiseley residents will be taken into account.
"Whilst I can understand why people might be against yet more homes being built in the town, I personally value a car park much more highly than a small increase in houses. This could lead to the much-needed additional car parking the town desperately needs."
