Bridge lit up at last

LIGHT has finally been shed on a problem plaguing Otley Bridge.

Leeds City Council has at last installed a replacement street light in the middle of the bridge.

The lamp last shone many months ago and it has taken persistent pressure from ward councillors to make sure the fault was investigated and addressed.

Coun Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said: "A long time ago now, the light had to be switched off because the power cable became faulty and dangerous.

"Because the bridge is an ancient monument, it has taken a lot of negotiation to come up with an alternative power supply.

"Local councillors have insisted that now the evenings are drawing in, the bridge cannot remain dark. Engineers have come up with a temporary solution to provide power and a new lighting column.

"Because the previous column was regularly damaged by HGVs crossing the bridge, the temporary solution is designed to light the footway, which will be of great benefit to pedestrians."
