Menston One World Fair to focus on environment

Environmental issues will be the focus of this year's One World Fair at Menston.

The event, which will be the fifth of its kind in the village, celebrates world culture and aims to raise awareness of international affairs.

The main attraction this year will be a paper making workshop run by the Alternative Technology Centre, in Hebden Bridge which will see locals learning how to make handmade recycled paper.

Young bird lovers will also learn how to make eco-friendly bird feeders from recycled materials.

Spokesman for the One World Fair Planning Group, Peter Fletcher, said: "It looks like it will be a very exciting day.

"The theme, Local Action for Planet Earth' is one that unites all peoples and cultures as it is concerned with ecology and the environment. We hear a lot about this and particularly about global warming and climate change, the effects of which are being felt throughout the world."

The fair will be held at Kirklands Community Centre, Main Street on Saturday, October 13, from 10am until 3pm.

Organisers say they expect a good turn out with around 20 charity stalls planned.

Mr Fletcher said: "It will have its characteristic international atmosphere with many new charity stalls this year which work worldwide to alleviate need.

"The fair is particularly good for those who wish to get their Christmas shopping done early. The workshops look particularly good this year and I am sure they will be enjoyed by anyone who comes along."

The fair is organised in association with One World Week,' which takes place at the end of October.

Lunches will be provided by the Tree House, Bradford which has a Fairtrade Café. Tea, coffee and juice will also be available.

Although entry to the fair is free, the bird feeder workshop will cost £1 and the paper making workshop will cost £3. For tickets telephone Anne Hunter on (01943) 876 932.
