'HEALTHCARE heroes' are being honoured.

Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust is saluting the achievements of its staff and volunteers.

You're a Star awards are being given out across five categories – innovation and quality, working together, non-clinical stars, unsung hero and improving patient experience.

Winners will be revealed in a glittering ceremony at the Mercure Bradford Bankfield Hotel, Bingley, on July 6.

Each will receive £1,000 – courtesy of the event's main backer, Sovereign Health Care – to support their ongoing work.

Short films spotlighting the finalists' efforts will be shown at the event.

Trust chairman, Mike Smith, said: "The You're a Star awards are a time to celebrate the work of outstanding individuals and teams over the last year.

"As the NHS marks its 70th year, it is also an opportunity to pause and reflect on the excellent work carried out every day by many more unsung heroes across our organisation who really do go above and beyond the call of duty.

"Our final 15 are all worthy winners.

"Their dedication, enthusiasm and skill is making a real difference to the health and wellbeing of the people of Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven."

Finalists in the working together category include the assessment and treatment unit, a multi-disciplinary team based at Lynfield Mount Hospital in Bradford, which supports people with learning disabilities and mental health problems; Grainne Eloi – interim head of mental health services – who has been working with Bradford Council, the police and voluntary sector agencies to improve urgent and emergency mental health crisis support, and the fluoride varnish team, which strives to improve oral health in communities.

Up for the improving patient experience award are the specialist palliative care team, assistant ward manager Prashant Wasnik and the Bingley Medical Practice district nurse team.

Contenders for the unsung hero award are Kimberley Evans, a member of the research and development team who identified dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in the home of a couple taking part in a care trust trial; Ruth Wood, an occupational therapist at the trust's dementia assessment unit, and Clive Harrison, a Champions Show the Way volunteer who has led successful reminiscence and family history sessions in the community.

In the non-clinical stars section, finalists are Emma Greenwood, a project support officer with the nursing development team, described by colleagues as "the glue which seals the team together"; estates and facilities, which has been noted for its customer focus and "can do" attitude, and administrators Jacqueline Duggan, Tina Sparks and Diane Wright, who provide support to the frontline children's services team.

And shortlisted for the innovation and quality award are Wendy Antill, a physiotherapist from the complex care team; the nursing development team, for its virtual community placement programme, and Annette Whomack-Brown, a healthcare support worker at Lynfield Mount Hospital who was behind the Four Seasons Cafe at the site.
