THE possibility of creating a sensory garden as part of High Royds Memorial Garden will be raised at an open meeting and AGM to be held by the Friends of High Royds Memorial Garden on Wednesday, April 25.

The meeting, starting at 7.30pm, will be held in Kirklands Community Centre, Main Street, Menston and is open to all.

After a short AGM to elect the management committee Helen Kemp, the chief executive officer of Leeds MIND, will give a talk on 'How the modern community services are dealing with the problem of mental ill-health'. After the talk tea and biscuits will be served and there will be ample opportunity for discussion and questions.

The Memorial Garden which has become known as an “Oasis of Peace” is visited by many people and last year received Royal recognition when the Duke of York presented a Community Service Award and congratulated all the volunteers for what they had achieved.

The Memorial Garden already has pathways which were specially designed for disabled access so the further development of a Sensory Garden would, says Friends chairman Ron Sweeney, be a logical extension and be designed for those members of the community who are blind, partially sighted or have problems with dementia. The work would be dependent upon voluntary help and also obtaining funding, which is being applied for.
