ESTIMATED timings for Tour de Yorkshire related road closures in Otley have been confirmed.

The big annual cycle race - organised by Welcome to Yorkshire - will pass through the town twice this year, on Friday, May 4 and again on Sunday, May 6.

On the Friday rolling road closures will be in place from half an hour before the first riders are due to arrive in town until they leave, about 30 minutes afterwards.

Both the Women's and the Men's races will reach Otley on May 4, at 12.08pm and 5.37pm respectively, so the closures will be from approximately 11.30am to 12.30pm and from 5pm to 6pm.

The roads affected for both events will be: Leeds Road, Gay Lane, Bondgate, Kirkgate, Clapgate, Bridge Street, Billams Hill and Weston Lane.

On Sunday, May 6 a similar rolling road closure will be in place (this time the route includes Newall Carr Road, Billams Hill to Gay Lane, and East Chevin Road).

The cyclists are expected to reach Otley at 4.27pm on the day, so the closures will run from about 4pm to 5pm.

In addition, a permanent road closure will be in place on May 6, from midnight until about 7pm, on East Chevin Road.

Otley Town Council Chair Councillor Ray Georgeson (Lib Dem, Danefield) said he was looking forward to the race.

He said: "We are again pleased to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire.

"It's a great international sporting event that has gained prominence and provides a great showcase for our town whenever it visits.

"Rolling road closures are a necessary element of the event and are well managed by Leeds City Council and the Police.

"Any short-term disruption is more than outweighed by the wider boost of visitor numbers to the town, and longer term benefits in terms of awareness of our attractions.

"I hope that motorists will understand this and welcome the Tour in that spirit."
