A TEENAGE Otley singer is standing for a seat in the UK Youth Parliament.

Seventeen year old Sylvia Cullen's voice graced the song - The Oak & the Ash - that accompanied the town's recent online Christmas shopping advert .

Sylvia is now hoping to secure enough votes to take up one of the four Leeds seats on the country's Youth Parliament, which lets 11 to 18 year olds use their voice to help bring about change.

The St Mary's, Menston Catholic Voluntary Academy student, who is a member of the Opera North Youth Chorus, is up against nine other young people from the area.

If elected, she is vowing to write a primary school programme to educate children about learning disabilities in a bid to increase understanding and inclusion.

She said: "I have worked as a personal assistant for children with learning disabilities for four years and understand the difficulties they face.

"I'm confident that this is something I can realistically achieve during the two-year term as a Member of Youth Parliament."

Voting for the Youth Parliament, which sits in both Leeds and Westminster, opened this week.

Eleven to 18 year olds can cast votes for their first and second choices in Leeds at https://tinyurl.com/UKYPLeeds2018 .
