PUPILS at Burley Oaks Primary School wowed parents and teachers last week by putting on a sensational Christmas show created by the school's own music teacher.

Five, six and seven year-old pupils in Key Stage 1 took part in a Christmas show written by the school's music teacher Mrs Newton.

Head teacher Claire Lee said: "Our Year 2 and Music teacher, Mrs Newton’s original school musicals have been compared to that created by Gary Barlow. She has a true talent for writing songs and scripts which have been specifically written to show off the individual talents of our KS1 children.

"Last year the children took part in the saga of the discarded Christmas toys but this year we've opted for the traditional nativity; with a twist of course. "Angels dressed as David Bowie and Abba adorn the stage and Mary, Joseph and the donkey travel to Bethlehem serenaded by The Proclaimers. It truly is a singing, dancing and musical extravaganza.

"The effort and enthusiasm of the children is extraordinary and because they know the songs and words have been written just for them they really do perform their socks off. We have watched children go from nervous embarrassment to Broadway pizazz in the space of three weeks and this progress really is indicative of how the passion and dedication of teachers can be so influential to them. It is both an inspirational and aspirational performance."

After the two performances Mrs Lee added: "It was a truly sensational show; the children beamed all the way through it, singing their hearts out."
