THE FALLEN of the First World War were remembered when a community came together for the official opening of a memorial.
Former servicemen and women were among those who attended the event at Nunroyd Park to see the commemorative garden opened by Lord Mayor of Leeds Cllr Jane Dowson.
Young and old gathered together to honour the Aireborough people whose lives had been cut short by war a century ago.
Members of the Royal British Legion paid their tribute along with councillors, clergy and local schoolchildren.
The event was marked by a reading, prayers and a blessing and the gathering was accompanied in a hymn by Guiseley Brass Band. First World War-themed music was also played by the band.
Ward councillors Paul Wadsworth, Graham and Pat Latty had led on the development of the project over the last two years.
Cllr Wadsworth said: "We were determined to create a space to commemorate those from our area who have lost their lives in war. It has been a long road getting here, but hopefully the new commemorative garden will stand as a fitting tribute to those who fell in World War I."
