THE SPEED limit on Bramhope's main road will be reviewed after a 319 house development is completed.

Leeds City Council was asked earlier this year, following a number of accidents near the Church Hill junction, to consider introducing a 30mph limit on part of the A660 Leeds Road.

Highways officers, however, concluded that speed had not been a factor in any of the ten crashes that have taken place at the bend since 2012, and so could not support the call for a lower limit.

Now Councillor Barry Anderson (Con, Adel & Wharfedale) has been told the issue will be looked at again should Miller Homes' 319 home scheme, for land between Leeds Road and Breary Lane East, proceed.*

Cllr Anderson recently arranged a meeting between council officers and two parents from Bramhope to discuss road safety concerns.

Afterwards, he received a response from a Senior Traffic Engineer which said: "We discussed that the existing speed limit of 40mph is the appropriate limit for the current character of the road.

"We do remain open-minded on a reduction, however, provided that this is appropriate and that the engineering case can be made.

"There is a major development proposed on the A660, close to Bramhope village, which is expected to have a significant impact on the character of the road.

"This may or may not make sufficient change to warrant a reduction in the speed limit, and so following completion of this development we will undertake a review of the speed limit.

"If other material changes to the road environment in Bramhope take place - for example new or revised crossing facilities or new building works - then again we would be willing to review the speed limit at that time."

A number of road safety measures have been introduced to the bend this year, including 'slow' road markings on the approach and resurfacing.
