AN ENGINEER from Otley is preparing to take part in a global skills challenge in the Middle East.

Machinist Alex McCluskey and two of his colleagues from Carnaud Metalbox will be representing the UK in the WorldSkills competition in Abu Dhabi.

The trio, up against other professionals from around the world, will be taking on the Manufacturing Team Challenge

Twenty three year old Alex, a former Ilkley Grammar School student, said: "My teammates and I will have the challenge of building a recovery unit - similar to a bomb disposal unit.

"We will also be given a surprise project to test our core skills against other countries."

Shipley-based Carnaud Metalbox has entered teams for WorldSkills, the largest vocational skills event in the world, for the last few years and previously represented the UK in 2013 and 2015.

This year's team will include Alex, electrician Jake Green, and mechanical fitter Jacob Parker.
