AN OTLEY man who has given 42 years to Scouting is urging more people to volunteer.
John Morgan retired from the Scout Movement a few weeks ago, ending an involvement that stretched back to his childhood.
The 81 year old joined the Cubs in 1947 which, in subsequent years, allowed him to develop a passion for canoeing.
His involvement as an adult volunteer, however, really began after he had served in the Armed Forces and then spent a number of years enjoying climbing and canoeing.
Mr Morgan's return to Scouting in 1974 was as a helper with the 2nd Otley Scout Group which he became leader of three years later.
He proceeded to introduce the group to canoeing which became a staple feature of future camps.
In 1977 he helped organise a Jubilee Carnival for the Scouts - a scheme that taken up a few years later as the inspiration for a rejuvenated Otley Carnival.
The 2nd Otley Scouts recently held a farewell party for Mr Morgan at which he was thanked for all his years of work and presented with a pair of framed, old one pound notes.
Recalling some of his many Scouting adventures, which have included abseiling, night hikes, igloo building and mountain bike trails, he said: "I have seen plenty of scout leaders come and go but I thank all of those who helped along the way, and enjoyed the company of those around me.
"Was it worth it?
"Yes, when you meet an ex-Scout you no longer recognise who comes up to you and says 'I remember when we did this and that' - even the one I slung my boots at because he would not shut up at three in the morning after a night hike!"
He added: "We are always looking for volunteers, with experience, to give to Scouting."
