CROWDS enjoyed a magical atmosphere when they turned out for the 5th Rawdon Village Show.

This year's event had a Harry Potter theme, with a real life 'Hagrid' and broomstick races.

Organisers say old and young alike supported the event at Rawdon Community Library and Micklefield Park on Saturday, July 15.

A spokeswoman said: "The day was a great success and local folk demonstrated their amazing creative skills across a wide variety of show categories. Entries ranged from Harry Potter themed handmade owls, Hagrid’s rock cakes, peppermint cream eyeballs and Invent Your Own Potion, to the more traditional sweet peas, marmalade and chutney.

"Children were also able to meet a real life ‘Hagrid’ who looked like he had come straight out of the pages of JK Rowling’s classic. MP Stuart Andrew was also lucky enough to meet Hagrid when he popped along to the show to enjoy the atmosphere.

"Hagrid led the children in some thrilling broomstick races where the children learnt to master their broomsticks, mount them and race them. Other races included perennial favourites egg and spoon and of course the sack race."

Show highlights included music and entertainment from Guiseley Brass Band and Peace Dance Academy as well as a visit from the fire brigade. Scouts manned a human fruit machine and other local organisations present included Trinity Church, Rawdon In Bloom and Rawdon WI.

The afternoon was rounded off with music from Stroke of Genius Big Band. Refreshments were provided by Book Shelf Cafe.

The event was organised by the volunteers who run Rawdon Community Library. All proceeds from the show go to the community building. The library is open throughout the year on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Activities based there include yoga, French conversation, creative writing, gardening and local history. There is also weekly storytelling for young children.
