A COUPLE have raised thousands of pounds for charity by opening up their garden to the public.

Lyn and Phil Short were taking part in the National Garden Scheme, which gives money to charities including MacMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and the Breast Cancer Research Action Group.

The couple, who have been inviting visitors to their garden at Hill Top for several years, have raised a total of £14,000. This year's event attracted more than 400 people over two days - including a couple from Denmark - and raised £2,500.

Visitors were able to explore the Victorian pathways, large rockery and summerhouse, the natural stream and bridges, surrounded by a wide variety of trees, flowers, shrubs and ferns, with beautiful views over Ilkley and Wharfedale.

Lyn and Phil thanked visitors and local businesses for their support, and they are also grateful to friends who baked cakes and helped out on the day

"We are very grateful for the support we have received over many years, and the number of visitors again exceed our expectations," Lynn said.

"We were very happy to share our garden with so many people, and we hope they enjoyed the experience."
