AN OTLEY teenager will represent the UK at a global Scouting event this summer.

Megan Smith has been chosen to take part in the 15th World Scout Moot, which takes place in Iceland in July and August.

The 18 year old will be joining 5,000 Scouts, aged 18 to 25, from 80 different countries for the nine-day adventure.

Her time in Iceland will involve taking on all kinds of challenges, including glacier walking and hiking, while learning about different cultures and customs.

Megan, who is part of a 500-strong UK contingent, will be staying at the National Scout Centre on banks of Lake Ulfljotsvatn during the trip.

She said: "I can’t believe I am actually going.

"It’s a once in a lifetime experience.

"As a Beaver Scout Leader I will be bringing back skills to give to the young people I support."

Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: "I’d just like to say a massive good luck to our brilliant UK contingent.

"They are heading off to the 15th World Scout Moot in Iceland and I am sure it’s going to be a trip to remember!

"I have filmed many times in Iceland and it is an incredible place to adventure and develop new skills that you can use throughout the rest of your life."

Megan is a Scout Network Member and a Beaver Scout Leader with the 1st Otley Parish Church Scout Group.

The Moot begins on July 25 and runs through to August 2.
