YOUNGSTERS heard about Fairtrade when supporters of the scheme visited schools in Horsforth.
More than 1500 children in the town were told about the project and why it is fair during a series of visits in Fairtrade Fortnight.
Sarah Marston, Community Champion at Horsforth Morrison’s, visited five schools with other members of the local Fairtrade Group to promote the scheme and to encourage children to look out for the distinctive symbol when they shop.
The first school visited was The Frobelian, where an assembly was based on healthy and Fairtrade snacks to fit in with the theme. West End, Westbrook Lane, St Margaret’s and Horsforth High School all had assemblies on the cost of a banana and how it impacts the banana workers.
Sarah said: "It has been an amazing two weeks promoting Fairtrade to so many children in Horsforth, they have been absolutely fantastic, really friendly and hopefully will try and persuade their parents to try and swap one thing."
St Margaret’s Primary School has been holding Fairtrade Tuckshops and has applied to become a Fairtrade school.
