AN INTERNATIONAL footballer at Leeds Trinity University has progressed to the second round of trials for a national university team.

Gibraltar goalkeeper Dayle Coleing was selected for the English Universities North squad for men’s football following trials at the University of Leeds. He will now represent the region against other teams across England, before national squad selection next year.

The final squad will complete in the annual Home Nations tournament, against university teams from Wales, Scotland and Ireland in April 2017.

Dayle said: “There were lots of talented keepers at the trials, coming from top universities, so making the preliminary squad came as a bit of a surprise. I’m proud to be selected and represent Leeds Trinity, and it means a lot to train and improve with players from other universities that carry different sets of skills and attitudes – which helps me to develop as a player.”

Currently a member of the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) football squad as first team goalkeeper, Dayle also plays for Liversedge FC and has represented Gibraltar internationally.

He studies Secondary Physical Education and Sports Development at Leeds Trinity University and is supported by the institution’s Elite Athlete Programme.

Dayle added: "I hope I make the final cut, and will really work hard next year to make the starting eleven. Competing in the tournament would mean a great deal as it would be an unforgettable experience; playing with the best players in the UK at university level."
