A GUISELEY man who has given blood 100 times has been honoured with a special medal.

Mark Robertson, 57, was presented with the medal and a certificate in a ceremony at Hazlewood Castle. Mr Robertson has been donating blood for 39 years - potentially helping to save or improve the lives of up to 300 patients.

The lifesaving efforts of 42 people from the region, who had collectively made 5,950 donations, were honoured with commemorative medals.

Amanda Eccles, Senior Marketing Coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "Our loyal donors, such as those honoured at our Hazlewood Castle ceremony, are very special to us, which is why such an event gives us the opportunity to say a real heartfelt thanks. Between them, they have saved thousands of lives, and improved the lives of countless others who have required blood transfusions. These donors are an inspiration to us all."

To be eligible to give blood donors need to be fit and healthy, weigh more than 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and be aged between 17 and 66, or up to 70 if they have given blood before. Anyone over the age of 70 needs to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.
