OTLEY'S sixth Christmas Tree Festival is underway.

All Saints Parish Church has once again been transformed into a scene of sparkly festive wonder for the 2016 event.

This year's festival features 40 trees which have all been specially decorated by local charities and community groups.

It was declared officially open at noon on Wednesday, December 7 by Otley Bellman Terry Ford accompanied by members of Guiseley Brass Band.

Thousands of people are expected to visit the church between now and 6pm on Saturday, December 10, when the festival ends.

Organisers Helen and Tim Wilkinson said: "Once again the town and business community has pulled together to put on another free family event.

"The preparation is a two month headache but thanks must go to the church volunteers whose building hosts the event, and to our many and various musical performers and the businesses that contribute.

"Foremost of those are Stephen H Smith's, who generously donate the trees, and Print Crew who donate publicity material.

"Everyone's goodwill and generosity means we can run the festival cash-neutral so visitors, participating groups and the town generally all benefit.

"With the successful Victorian Fayre last weekend it's nice to see so many happy faces around town in the run up to Christmas."

The festival - which also features a variety of performances by local choirs, singers and musicians - is free to attend but visitors are encouraged to donate to collection buckets beneath the trees.
