A COUNCILLOR who owes his life to a defibrillator has welcomed the installation of emergency equipment outside Yeadon Library.

Ryk Downes, who represents Otley and Yeadon, collapsed while running in Pool-in-Wharfedale in January, and only survived thanks to passers-by giving CPR and using a defibrillator. He underwent major heart surgery shortly afterwards.

Now he wants to see the life saving equipment on every street corner.

The defibrillator outside the library can be used by first responders or members of the public who can call 999 for a code to open the box, and receive instructions from the operator.

Cllr Downes praised Yeadon Town Hall Users Group for their generosity in providing funding for the device that may save lives in Yeadon for years to come.

He said: "I want to see a defibrillator on every corner, as early action is crucial in helping someone to survive a heart attack.

"A defibrillator saved my life this year, and I hope that many more will be saved by this device over the coming years.

"The Yeadon Town Hall Users Group cannot be commended highly enough for their donation that will help residents and visitors to Yeadon in the very best way."
