CHILDREN are helping to make their streets safer by designing new 20 mile per hour signs.

Emma Lister and Lennon Craig came up with artwork for the signs for a zone outside their school at Rufford Park Primary in Yeadon.

The children were winners of a competition at their school to draw pictures for the newly installed 20mph warnings. The signs have now gone up in the streets around the school along with speed reduction platforms to make it safer for pupils to walk.

Otley and Yeadon councillor Ryk Downes presented the key stage two children with replicas of the signs for them to keep at their Achievement Assembly last week.

He said: "The competition was fierce and the standard was very high, which made choosing the winners a tough decision. However, the winning two did a superb job and they should be proud to see their masterpieces displayed, making their roads a safer place for all the pupils."
