BURLEY-in-Wharfedale businessman James Waddington has just finished a mega five day cycling challenge to help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

This Pedal-Inn event from September 20 to 24 saw James cycle over 424 miles around the Inglenook Inns & Taverns estate, welcomed at each final destination by friends, customers and local cyclists.

He was accompanied on the first leg of his route by colleague Adam Evans of Ilkley Cycles - friends and rivals, they have often competed alongside at the Ilkley Triathlon. They completed the challenging first day of 'Pedal-Inn' from The Heron at Kendal to South Lodge, Ripon together. The route was marked a seven out of ten difficulty and was 73 miles in total.

On day four James came off his bike - which was so badly damaged that a replacement needed to be found - Adam came to the rescue and travelled 50 miles with a replacement. James completed his mission on Saturday, September 24 when his wife Samantha and daughters Harriet and Charlotte were there to cheer him on and meet him with a welcome banner at The Heron, Kendal which completed his circular route.

James said: “I’m a huge cycling fan and wanted to do something different to raise money for Macmillan. Everyone has been touched directly, whether it is family or friends, by some form of cancer. We’ve had friends who have been nursed by Macmillan nurses, who have allowed them to pass away with dignity and respect. Our ultimate aim is to raise enough money to cover the cost of a Macmillan nurse for a year which would be a major achievement".
